5 favorite things about the Tesla Cybertruck

Many Tesla owners and potential Tesla owners feel the same way about the Cybertruck. However, Tesla owners and intenders are an optimistic bunch. Tesla says they have 1 million takers who have handed over $100 for the privilege to own one. Some estimates say the reservation number is closer to 2 million. If you have an extra $100 burning a hole in your pocket, go to Tesla’s website and join the queue.

I would love to see Rev Run emcee a Cybertruck event in the future, then ask Elon Musk, “How is it, E?” Then, Musk replies in his trademark hesitant and almost reluctant tone. “Well, it… it’s…, yeah, um, it’s tricky.” And the crowd goes completely wild.

The Cybertruck is different, that’s for sure. Its popularity could cause so many delays that potential buyers move on. Still, the truck has innovative features that make it worth looking into, even if you’re not a “Tesla above all” buyer.

Here are my five favorite features of the Tesla Cybertruck.

1. The built-in bed cover

The Cybertruck’s bed cover is built-in.

There are tons of aftermarket bed covers available, including some that the dealer can install and can be included in the truck’s warranty coverage. The Tesla version is much better than all those other options; it’s a power-operated retractable cover. No flipping it up or keeping track of a separate key for locking and unlocking. It’s an elegant solution for something I’ve always thought was rather clunky. Most of today’s bed covers do not look at home on a $60,000 truck. The Tesla solution fits perfectly with the rest of the truck.

2. Rear-wheel steering

trucks had the feature in the 2000s. Rear-wheel steering makes sense on long pickups like the Cybertruck. The main advantage is better maneuverability in parking lots or other tight urban spaces.

3. Front light bar

F-150 Lightning has this feature, but something about the Tesla version feels more like Knight Rider than a practical tool.

4. Horizontal touchscreen

Measuring 18.5 inches, the central touch screen is mounted horizontally, in landscape orientation, like in the Model 3 and other Tesla models. I’ve never liked the vertical portrait orientation of some touchscreens. No matter how big, vertical screens are less useful.

5. Zero-to-60 time

Telsa says the Cybertruck can get from zero to 60 in 2.6 seconds. That’s impressive. In a recent live-streamed event, they made a point of drag racing a Cybertruck against a Porsche 911. Stunts aside, the Cybertruck is quick and quiet, as you would expect from an EV.

The wrap

It looks like it’s from the future. OK, not exactly the future as seen from 2024, but the future as seen from the lens of KITT’s all-seeing camera. The Cybertruck is unique — even odd. But that’s the point. A lot of people are going to want a Cybertruck simply because of its look. Is it ugly? Yes, but many will see it as a thing of beauty. Maybe they’re right.
