It’s hard to wrap one’s head around the devastating toll of the twin earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria last week, which have claimed more than 33,000 lives. But there is some small comfort in the outpouring of international support as aid rushes into the area — including this anecdote of an anonymous man who walked into the Turkish embassy in the U.S., and then donated $30 million for the earthquake victims.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted on Saturday that he was “deeply moved” by this donation. The Turkish embassy wasn’t immediately available for comment to elaborate on the gift. But CNN reported that Anadolu Agency, one of Turkey’s state-run media channels, confirmed the news.
Sharif tweeted that “an anonymous Pakistani” walked into the embassy to make this generous gift.
“These are such glorious acts of philanthropy that enable humanity to triumph over the seemingly insurmountable odds,” Sharif added in the tweet.
His tweet was retweeted almost 2,000 times by the middle of Sunday afternoon, and had been “liked” more than 14,000 times.

The Pakistani National Disaster Management Authority also tweeted on Saturday that two more relief shipments were headed to Pakistan’s “sisters and brothers” in Turkey to provide more aid.
And Turkey native Hamdi Ulukaya, the CEO and founder of Chobani yogurt, has pledged to donate $1 million to the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, and said that he will match up to $1 million in additional donations to help people affected by the disaster.

AMZN,
is also among the companies that donated to disaster relief. It’s sending $500,000 in cash donations to groups including the World Food Program, Save the Children, UNICEF, Red Crescent, AKUT Search and Rescue Association, and the AHBAP Foundation. Amazon shoppers can also donate through a new donations page on Amazon’s Türkiye store.
IKEA is sending a roughly $10.7 million donation to Médecins Sans Frontières (an international, independent medical humanitarian organization) intended to aid the earthquake victims, as well.
