White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday addressed the cocaine found in a West Wing common area, saying it’s an area that many visitors can access.
“Where this was discovered is a heavily traveled area,” Jean-Pierre told reporters during a press briefing, adding that many West Wing visitors come through that location.
The White House was briefly evacuated Sunday evening while President Joe Biden was at Camp David after the Secret Service discovered a white powder. A preliminary test indicated the powder is cocaine, and an additional test confirmed that finding.
The Secret Service is investigating the incident, and Jean-Pierre sounded upbeat about the probe, even as one law-enforcement official told Politico that the culprit in this case isn’t likely to be determined.
“We have confidence that the Secret Service will get to the bottom of this,” she said.
Secret Service agents were doing routine rounds when they found the cocaine Sunday in an area accessible to tourists, other visitors and White House staff. A Washington Post report said it was spotted near small boxes where visitors taking tours are instructed to leave their phones, and NBC News said the substance was in a small, zippered bag.
The incident has drawn criticism from Republicans. GOP Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana tweeted that the Biden family is “unfit to live in the White House,” and he said cocaine was never found in the Trump White House.
