Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been cleared to resume his NFL career and is attending the team’s voluntary workout this week.

The news comes less than four months after Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field during a “Monday Night Football” game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“He’s fully cleared, he’s here, and he is of the mindset, he’s in a great headspace to come back and make his return,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane said.

Back in February, Hamlin had said he hoped he could play football again.

“Eventually. That’s always the goal, like I said, as a competitor, you know, I’m trying to do things to keep advancing my situation,” Hamlin said at the time. “But I’m allowing that to be in God’s hands. I’m just thankful he gave me a second chance.”

Hamlin’s cardiac arrest was initially treated on the field by Bills emergency medical staff, who were at the player’s side in less than a minute and immediately saw that he didn’t have a pulse. They performed CPR and defibrillation to restart his heart — all with a national television audience on ABC

“The Bills training staff recognized this was not a run-of-the-mill injury, immediately responded and got the emergency-response team involved in his care,” Dr. Timothy Pritts, vice chair for clinical operations at UC Health in Cincinnati, told MarketWatch’s Nicole Pesce about the injury. Because of the medical work on the scene, “this went as well as something like this could go,” Pritts said. “They did a fantastic job.”

Hamlin, 24, was treated in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s intensive-care unit and at a hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., before being released.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills, the NFL and NFL Players Association agreed to pay Hamlin his full salary, something that is not typically the case when players are placed on the injured list.

In the months since he collapsed on the field, Hamlin has made numerous appearances around the country. He met with President Joe Biden, attended Super Bowl festivities in Arizona and received the NFLPA’s Alan Page Community Award. He also took part in a pregame ceremony in which the NFL honored the Bills’ and Bengals’ training and medical staffs and the first responders who treated him.
