Durable-goods orders drop 6.1% in January on fewer airplane contracts

U.S. orders for durable goods sank 6.1% in January, almost entirely because of Boeing signing hardly any airplane contracts. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 5% decline.

Orders excluding transportation slipped a small 0.3% last month.

Market reaction: The Dow Jones Industrial Average
DJIA,
-0.16%

and S&P 500
SPX,
-0.38%

were set to open mixed in Tuesday trades.
