Passenger-car registrations across the European Union rose in January, marking a positive start to the new year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, known as ACEA.

New-car registrations–a reflection of sales–increased about 11% on year to 760,041 vehicles last month, the ACEA said on Tuesday.

“However, this was largely due to an unusually modest base of comparison in 2022, when the lowest January volume on record was reached,” it said.

Most of the region’s major markets contributed positively to overall growth, with strong gains of approximately 51% in Spain and 19% in Italy, followed by solid growth of 8.8% in France. Germany instead recorded a 2.6% decline on year.
