A ransomware attack compromised sensitive information from the U.S. Marshals Service, according to reports late Monday.

NBC News and Bloomberg separately reported that sensitive law-enforcement data, including employee records and information about investigations, was exposed in a ransomware and data-exfiltration incident discovered on Feb. 17.

Department officials described the breach as a “major incident,” the reports said, and forensic and criminal investigations are being conducted. The exposed system was reportedly disconnected from the department’s network after it was discovered.

NBC News reported that information about the Witness Security Program was not exposed in the breach.
