The leaders of the U.S., Canada and Mexico on Monday condemned the attacks on Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential palace by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, saying in a joint statement that they stand with the South American nation and its democracy.
“We stand with Brazil as it safeguards its democratic institutions,” the leaders said in the joint statement. “Our governments support the free will of the people of Brazil. We look forward to working with President Lula on delivering for our countries, the Western Hemisphere, and beyond.”
On Sunday, rioters broke windows, toppled furniture, and hurled computers and printers to the ground in an attempt to either restore the far-right Bolsonaro to power or oust the newly inaugurated leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Justice Minister Flávio Dino said the acts amounted to terrorism and coup-mongering and that authorities have begun tracking those who paid for the buses that transported protesters to the capital, the Associated Press reported.
Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador are scheduled to meet in Mexico City on Tuesday for the 10th North American Leaders’ Summit.

The White House said the three leaders will meet on Tuesday to “continue to deepen and expand our security cooperation and economic partnership and increase coordination on global and regional issues.”
