Check your eye drops.
Multiple brands have recalled certain strands or batches of their eye drops this year over concerns about dangerous infections. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified an outbreak of a rare drug-resistant bacteria linked to EzriCare Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears linked to three deaths and several cases of lost vision. Both companies distribute eye drops from Global Pharma Healthcare.

It can be hard to keep track of which products have been pulled, so here is a running list of major eye drop recalls in 2023. You can also click through the links below for more details on each recall, which are explained on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

Pharmedica USA LLC’s Purely Soothing 15% MSM Drops
- Recalled March 3 over “non-sterility” concerns, and could cause eye infections. Pharmedica USA said it has not received any complaints about the eye drops yet, and is conducting the recall voluntarily.

Apotex Corp.’s Brimonidine Tartrate Ophthalmic Solution, 0.15%
- Recalled March 1 over bottle cap issues that compromised sterility in six lots of the eye drops. Apotex’s recall notice didn’t specify if there were any injuries associated with the product and is conducting the recall voluntarily.

Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears
- Recalled Feb. 2 due to possible bacteria contamination. Along with EzriCare’s Artificial Tears, use of this product could lead to eye infections, permanent loss of vision and death over a bloodstream infection. The product is being recalled voluntarily.

The FDA recommends contacting your eye doctor or another health professional if you experience any eye irritation from these drops. You can also contact the CDC for additional information.
