Amid the ongoing dispute between ESPN-owned Walt Disney Co.
DIS,
and Charter Spectrum
CHTR,
that led to channel blackouts for nearly 15 million cable customers, many people are scrambling to find a way to watch the opening game of Monday Night Football.
Interested sports fans trying to watch ESPN, the home of Monday Night Football, in the near term do have some options if they have been blacked out by the dispute.
Streaming brands including Google’s
GOOG,
YouTubeTV, FuboTV
FUBO,
and SlingTV all carry the Disney family of channels, including ESPN. Prices for these services depend on which type of subscription you get, but they all fall between $40 and $75 a month.
So if you’re worried that the Spectrum-Disney dispute may continue deeper into the NFL season, subscribing to a streaming service is a good way to watch Monday Night Football for a while.
Some, but not all, Monday Night Football games will also stream on ESPN’s OTT service ESPN+, including the week 1 game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. An ESPN+ subscription is $9.99 a month (increasing to $10.99/month starting Oct. 12), and there is not currently any free trial promotion. What’s more, because this week’s Monday Night Football game will also be broadcast on ABC, there may be an old school way to catch the game for free: rabbit ears.
The TV antenna, which can come in the form of the indoor “rabbit ears” or a larger outdoor antenna, can provide free access to some over-the-air channels including ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, and could potentially give fans ABC access, depending on their location.
The Disney group of channels that have been blacked out for Spectrum cable customers include ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNU, as well as non-sports channels like ABC-owned stations, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic.
Last week, shares of Walt Disney Co. Disney’s stock headed for its longest losing streak in nearly a year amid its feud with Spectrum. Disney’s stock moved 0.59% higher during opening trading on Monday.
